Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is usually associated with kids; however, a lot of adults still have problems with it well into adulthood. People with ADHD do not realise they have it until they face challenges at the job. If someone is unable to focus, they probably have a lot of unfinished projects that they didn’t get to long ago. In high-stress environments, where there is an expectation of multitasking/switching from task to task frequently, these challenges can be especially magnified.
How Adults with ADHD Experience Time Management Issues
Many adults with ADHD have problems related to time management. They may underestimate the amount of time a task will require and fail to meet deadlines, as well as continuously being late for meetings and appointments. Some people may delay starting on crucial tasks until they feel tremendous amounts of pressure to complete them.
None of these issues is due to laziness or lack of interest. In many situations, the challenges that ADHD creates in an adult’s executive functioning skills create these issues. Executive functioning skills help with developing a plan, organising the plan, prioritising the plan, and effectively executing the plan (in this case, your ability to manage your time).

Constantly Losing Things and Being Disorganised
Chronic lack of memory is another sign of ADHD at work. Employees who exhibit this behaviour tend to constantly misplace important items. Additionally, employees who show signs of forgetfulness will often forget meetings, instructions, or follow-up tasks from others in spite of their attempts to be organised.
The way their work area looks can also be an indicator of whether or not they have difficulty concentrating. Workspaces can often be disorganised, which causes employees to have trouble finding the files or items they need, as well as determining what to do first. There are also many digital forms of disorganisation, including having too many emails in an inbox, missing emails or not being able to keep track of calendars and reminders.
Difficulties Finishing Long-Term Projects
Sometimes those with ADHD have an easier time starting than finishing projects. They may start projects enthusiastically but get bored and lose motivation to continue. Since long-term projects require a lot of concentration, planning, and consistency, these types of projects can be particularly difficult.
When working on long-term projects, employees can sometimes bounce around between tasks without ever completing any of them, so they will leave projects unfinished or late. In some cases, people will look for stimulation by doing the newest and most interesting task they can find and won’t continue working on routine tasks.
Impulsive Behaviour and Communication Challenges
The following traits may be evident when someone has high impulsivity in the workplace: interruptions of conversations, speaking out before thinking it through, and making quick decisions without considering their possible outcome. Will have difficulty waiting for their turn to speak when participating in an office meeting or discussion.
Many times, the impulsivity of some individuals causes others at work to misinterpret their behaviours as being intolerant, reckless behaviour or portraying an unprofessional attitude. The impulsive nature of these individuals is primarily due to their difficulties associated with self-control and has nothing to do with their intentions.
Very impulsive people may also be extremely emotional about how they respond and feel when given criticism from their supervisors, feeling overly stressed due to workplace demands and/or sudden changes to their daily routines.
Having these indicators does not necessarily indicate that an individual suffers from ADHD because there may be many other reasons for them, including anxiety, insufficient sleep, or any other circumstance that would cause someone not to be focused or organised.
